Rep. Andrea Salinas’ Statement on Reconciliation Vote

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (OR-06) issued the following statement following her vote against giving more money to President Trump and his Administration.

"I voted against giving an additional $70 billion to ICE and CBP because Oregonians deserve to feel safe in their communities. Since the beginning of Trump's term, ICE and CBP have been terrorizing our towns, ripping apart families, and violating the rights of Oregonians. This money will only embolden ICE to continue spreading fear and brutality. I proudly voted no.

"Instead of doing anything to rein in ICE or help Americans survive in Trump's affordability crisis, Republicans voted to give them an additional $70 billion. This is on top of the $150 billion Republicans gave ICE and CBP in the Big Ugly Bill, which was funded by cutting SNAP and Medicaid. This money will fund ICE and CBP through the rest of Trump's term without adding any new accountability measures to protect people like Alex Pretti and Renee Good, or my constituents Marta and Maria. ICE is traumatizing children and holding them in unacceptable conditions in detention centers. They are treating women horribly, subjecting them to abuse and sexual assault while in custody. They are preventing detainees from receiving adequate medical treatment.
"I don't support giving another cent to ICE and CBP until Congress passes protections to stop their abuses of power. Instead of voting to terrorize communities across the country, Republicans need to focus on stopping the affordability crisis that's devastating families."

Rep. Salinas submitted the ICE and CBP Constitutional Accountability Act and Fund Families not ICE as amendments to be considered in the Secure America Act. House Republicans on the Committee on Rules did not include either amendment in the final bill.
