Montgomery County Cancer and Tobacco Program to Host Park Clean Up Day on Friday, Nov. 14 at Matthew Henson Trail in Silver Spring

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, November 5, 2025

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services' (DHHS) Tobacco Community Grant program invites residents of all ages to join the Cancer and Tobacco Program Park Clean Up Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Matthew Henson Trail, located at 13421 Georgia Ave. in Silver Spring. In-person registration will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The event aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of tobacco use and promote community involvement in creating cleaner, healthier public spaces. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to participate in removing tobacco litter and other waste along the trail, supporting Montgomery County's commitment to public health and environmental stewardship.

"Keeping our parks and trails clean is a vital part of protecting our environment and promoting public health," said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. "This cleanup event is a good opportunity for residents to get directly involved, make a tangible difference in their community, and stand against the harmful impacts of tobacco waste."

The Park Clean Up Day will also provide an opportunity for residents to connect with DHHS staff and learn more about local tobacco prevention and cessation programs. This event is part of Montgomery County's ongoing efforts to reduce tobacco-related harm, promote cancer prevention, and improve environmental health across the County.

Residents are encouraged to bring family, friends, and colleagues to participate. Supplies for cleanup will be provided on-site.
