Du Quoin State Fairgrounds to Host Free Fishing Day for Kids in July

DU QUOIN, IL - The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), will host a free kids' fishing day on Tuesday, July 7 at 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Fishing poles, bait and basic instruction will be provided by IDNR. While no fishing license is required for those under the age of 16, those 16 and older will need a fishing license to participate.

Advance registration is required, and participation will be limited to the first 25 kids to sign up.

For more information or to register, call (618) 542-1511. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed on holidays.

On the day of the event, participants will meet at 9 a.m. in front of Expo Hall on the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds. Remember to bring sunscreen, bug spray, water and a chair.

Parents are highly encouraged to attend the program. The fishing program is designed to teach fishing basics and engage families in the enjoyment of spending time together in nature. There are always times while fishing with groups during which parents can help, especially with their younger children. Older children are welcome to attend without parental supervision.

"Fishing is a great sport that exposes kids to nature while teaching them the importance of patience and persistence," said Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. "Events like this free fishing day encourage our neighbors to visit the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, which has activities and opportunities throughout the year, not just during the fair."
