KANSAS CITY, Mo. - "This April, Kansas City voters will provide their opinions on a citywide monorail system proposed by Clay Chastain and a plan, as drafted and introduced by petitioners, that would place new limits on future city officials looking to support future economic development projects featuring a stadium, arena, or performance venue with more than 2,500 seats, which differs from the current approach used in Kansas City and our neighboring Kansas suburbs in connection with the new Chiefs stadium, practice facility, and other proposals.
"Both plans were placed on the ballot in accordance with the City Charter. Neither of the proposals bars City officials from continuing to work on transit issues, including necessarily funding the KCATA regional bus system in the next budget in March, and economic development, including the Crown Center and Berkeley Riverfront redevelopments.
"Projects already underway, such as Royals Stadium at Crown Center, the Kansas City Current stadium expansion, the Kansas City Symphony's new South Plaza project, and the Starlight Theater canopy project are not affected by the proposal."
"Kansas City can walk and chew gum. Petitioners know that the City is investing hundreds of millions of dollars into affordable housing initiatives, up from roughly zero dollars budgeted annually before the Mayor's term, and billions in infrastructure improvements. The City is proud of its strong work to improve access to housing, tenant protections, increased wages, and essential services, while also building a community that is retaining global headquarters and major entertainment attractions that provide jobs to thousands, like the Royals, Current, Starlight, and symphony projects."
