Mayor Todd Gloria Issues Statement on City Council Adoption of the FY27 Budget

SAN DIEGO - Mayor Todd Gloria today issued the following statement after the City Council's unanimous adoption of the Fiscal Year 2027 city budget:

"From the beginning of this process, I've been clear about the fiscal challenges facing our city. My administration proposed a balanced budget that made the tough choices needed to protect the core services San Diegans rely on.

"Every taxpayer dollar must address the needs residents see and experience every day: roads and stormwater infrastructure, deferred maintenance, public safety, trash pickup and water delivery. When we move away from those priorities, San Diegans see the consequences in their neighborhoods.

"Some of the City Council's modifications increased spending and moved us further away from structural balance. Decisions like diverting Measure C funds from the Convention Center may avoid difficult cuts this year, but they set us up for the same budget challenges next year.

"Leadership means making responsible choices even when the outcome isn't perfect. While I disagree with several of the Council's adjustments, I will sign this budget - with gratitude for the thousands of residents who participated, the philanthropic partners who stepped up, the City staff who worked tirelessly to prepare it, and the City Council whose partnership is necessary to keep this city moving.

"The work does not end here. Putting San Diego on stable financial footing will require fiscal discipline, honest conversations, and more difficult decisions in the years ahead. My administration has never shied away from tough calls, and I will continue advancing responsible solutions that protect core services, strengthen infrastructure, and secure our long-term financial health.

"With my signature, the FY27 budget takes effect July 1, 2026."
