Sparks, NV - The following are highlights from the May 11, 2026, Sparks City Council meeting.

Announcements, Presentations, Recognition Items, and Items of Special Interest:

  • City Manager Louthan announced three vacancies on the Sparks Parks & Recreation Commission, each for a three-year term. Members must be a resident of Sparks or have a valid Sparks business license. Applications will be accepted until May 15, 2026, at 5 p.m. and are available at cityofsparks.us/getinvolved.
  • City Manager Louthan announced two vacancies on the Sparks Civil Service Commission, each for a three-year term. Members must be Sparks residents, cannot be City employees, a member of the City Council, or appointed to another board or commission of the City, or related to one within 3rd degree of consanguinity. Applications will be accepted until May 15, 2026, at 5 p.m. and are available at cityofsparks.us/getinvolved.
  • Mayor Ed Lawson proclaimed the following:
    • May 17-23, 2026, as National Public Works Week to recognize our dedicated professionals who plan, build, maintain, and improve the essential infrastructure and services that keep our community safe, healthy, and functioning every day.
    • The month of May as Educator Appreciation Month to recognize educators' vital role in inspiring, mentoring, and shaping students while expressing deep gratitude for their lasting contributions to the community.
    • May 11-17, 2026, as Salvation Army week to honor the longstanding commitment to providing vital services, compassionate care, and support to individuals and families in need.
    • The month of May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness about the risks of skin cancer and promote prevention, early detection, and life-saving sun safety practices.

General Business

Council approved:

  • Mayor Lawson's appointment of Steven Sperber to the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Commission for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2029.
  • The establishment of a City of Sparks Safety Task Force.
  • The acceptance of a $25,785 grant from Travel Nevada to support the 2026 Celebrate Sparks event and mural project.
  • A $655,138.00 consulting agreement, with Sparks' share being $205,516.79, for Final Design and Engineering Services During Construction with Stantec Consulting Services and the City of Reno for the Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility Gas Conditioning System Improvements Project.
  • A $576,147.00 purchase of two Caterpillar 930 Wheel Loaders.
  • A $1,303,859.49 purchase of 16 police patrol vehicles.
