Project Update: Work Continues on SR-1 between Moss Beach and Half Moon Bay

Work to continue through 2026

San Mateo County ― Caltrans is making progress on the State Route 1 (SR-1) Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project. Overnight paving and electrical work has taken place over the past several weeks, while permanent striping and guardrail implementation work will soon take place. As roadway work continues throughout the project limits, drivers can expect nighttime closures and minimal traffic impacts.

Ongoing Work

Paving Update: Continuing through August 2026, crews will pave the roadway. Paving work began near Half Moon Bay Airport and continues south through the project limits. Crews will perform paving work overnight, necessitating lane closures and one-way traffic control. Drivers should expect minor delays between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Final paving work is underway and expected to be completed by the end of August 2026.

Electrical Work Update: Signal upgrading work is underway and expected to continue through the end of 2026. As this work progresses, signal operations will be set to an optimized schedule during construction at many intersections instead of "on-demand" activation. Drivers may notice delays even when pedestrians or cross traffic are not present. The sensors will be reactivated once the electrical work has been completed at each intersection.

Pilarcitos Creek Bridge Rehabilitation Update: Crews have been working to install additional protection for the foundation of the Pilarcitos Creek Bridge on SR-1 in Half Moon Bay. While work is underway, traffic may be limited to 1 lane. Work is expected to be completed by September 2026.

Drainage Work Update: Progress is underway to rehabilitate 3 drainage culvert systems, which will prevent water damage to the road base and reduce dangerous pooling or hydroplaning. Work is expected to be completed by September 2026.

Please note: On rare occasions, lanes may be closed as early as 6 p.m., and some daytime lane closures may be necessary at short notice. Work schedules may change due to weather.

Upcoming Work

Striping: As crews complete paving work, permanent striping work will take place to improve traffic safety and navigational order. This new striping will include the implementation of 7.3 miles of Class II buffered bike lanes.

Guardrail Upgrades: Crews will soon begin upgrading 20 guardrails throughout the project limits to improve vehicle redirection on SR-1.

Known as the SR-1 Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project, the $46.7M project encompasses upgrading assets (such as pavement, guardrails, curbs, and crosswalks) that are nearing the end their service lives. Assets will be brought up to ADA standards, and Class II bike lanes will be added to both the north- and south-bound sides of the roadway. The project will continue through the summer of 2027. This work is funded by the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP). SHOPP is the State Highway System's "fix-it-first" program that funds the repair and preservation on the state's highway system.
