Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences' state-of-the-art Simulation Center has achieved full accreditation in core and teaching/education areas from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. This prestigious distinction places DMU among an elite group of simulation centers worldwide. Out of approximately 770 simulation centers listed in the SSH directory, fewer than 300 have earned this recognition. Only five of the 63 osteopathic campuses have received this recognition.
The SSH accreditation highlights the simulation center's commitment to advancing health care education through innovative, high-quality simulation practices. Accreditation signifies external validation of the center's ability to deliver transformative learning experiences that prepare future health care professionals while enhancing patient outcomes.
"Achieving SSH accreditation is a significant milestone for DMU," says Kimberly Patterson, M.S.N., R.N., CHSE, simulation center director. "This recognition reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff and students to ensuring excellence in health care education. Our simulation center is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, and this accreditation reaffirms the quality of our efforts."
The 27,000-square-foot simulation center is a vital training ground for DMU students across multiple disciplines. It offers cutting-edge technology, including high-fidelity manikins, augmented reality tools and telemedicine capabilities, allowing learners to develop clinical, technical and interpersonal skills in a safe and supportive environment.
SSH accreditation distinguishes the simulation center as a leader in simulation-based education, enhancing its reputation and attracting students, faculty and collaborators who value high-quality training.
"This achievement demonstrates DMU's commitment to shaping compassionate, highly competent health care professionals," says Angela L. Walker Franklin, Ph.D., president and CEO of DMU. "Our simulation center is a cornerstone of our innovative approach to education, and this accreditation validates its impact on advancing the future of health care."
