BATON ROUGE - LSU Health New Orleans and LSU Health Shreveport, now part of the new LSU Flagship, are joining a national initiative to enhance nutrition education for future physicians. This effort reinforces LSU's commitment to research, education, and service that addresses Louisiana's needs for improved health outcomes.
Alongside universities such as the University of Wisconsin, University of Florida, University of California-Irvine, and other prestigious schools, LSU Health New Orleans and LSU Health Shreveport will require at least 40 hours of nutrition education, or an equivalent competency, for medical students to meet national standards beginning in Fall 2026. This coordinated effort highlights how LSU's health sciences centers are collaborating to address evolving priorities in medical education and patient care.
For LSU, this initiative builds on the university's strategic priorities and tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration across the new Flagship to address critical challenges, including chronic disease, preventive care, and physician workforce development, leveraging research strength and educational excellence across all five campuses.
"By integrating academic training with research and patient-centered care, the LSU Research Flagship is developing solutions that benefit Louisiana communities and have broad national significance," said LSU Chancellor Jim Dalton.
Nutrition education is considered a gap in America's medical training, with 75% of medical schools requiring no clinical nutrition coursework and less than 1% of total lecture hours touch on nutrition. As a result, only 14% of current health care providers feel comfortable discussing nutrition with their patients.
Additional details about implementation and local impact are available through each campus's respective communications: LSU Health Shreveport & LSU Health New Orleans.
