City of Tuscaloosa to Name Kip Tyner Plaza and Kip Tyner Parkway after Late Council President

The City of Tuscaloosa will rename Alberta Park to Kip Tyner Plaza and 26th Avenue East to Kip Tyner Parkway in honor of the late City Council President. Mayor Walt Maddox announced the honorary name changes at this evening's Celebration of Life and Service honoring Councilor Tyner, who passed away at age 70 on Friday, September 18.

"Kip's heart and soul is in this park," said Mayor Walt Maddox. "I know we will all miss our friend dearly, but we will continue to tell Mr. Tyner's stories of service and remember how much better he made Alberta."

First elected as District 5 City Councilor in 1997, Councilor Tyner served seven consecutive terms on the City Council and two as Council President. Throughout his tenure, Councilor Tyner made significant contributions to the development of Alberta, spearheading projects such as the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center, the recruitment of SWJ Technology and enhancements to the University Boulevard East Improvements Project.
