It's On: Georgia GOP's Race to the Right Heats Up as Raffensperger Jumps In

The race to the right is on.

This week, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger jumped into the governor's race by "pledging to back [Donald] Trump's economic policies" and highlighting his "culture-war priorities." The Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted that "Raffensperger is no moderate," reporting that he "backed anti abortion laws" and pushed a "no-exceptions opposition to abortion" during his time in the state legislature.

Raffensperger's record isn't just getting scrutiny - his launch has also accelerated the already-chaotic and messy Republican gubernatorial primary.

Burt Jones responded to Raffensperger's announcement by lashing out at his opponents and doubling down on his MAGA record - bragging about his endorsement from Donald Trump and his record of backing Trump "since Day One." Jones is in full support of Trump's DOGE cuts, which included huge cuts to the CDC, his cost-raising tariffs, and his budget law that threatens health care for hundreds of thousands of Georgians and has already closed one maternal care unit in the state. Not to be outdone, Chris Carr's campaign hit back by claiming that Jones can't win a general election.

The nasty infighting comes as many Republicans have voiced discontent with the party's current crop of candidates. In a jaw-dropping interview last week, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said that she's "not inspired" by the Republican gubernatorial candidates. Green said they are "not talking about what matters to voters most, like crime, improving the education system, addressing the environmental impact of data centers that power AI and securing the border" and that "these candidates don't seem serious."
