Following the success of last year's event, Shetland Islands Council and RSPB Shetland are launching this year's appeal to redistribute unwanted outdoor clothing.
Staff involved with the Council's Sport and Leisure Services 'Kit for All' initiative and the Active Schools team are collaborating with RSPB Shetland to launch a special appeal for donations of outdoor clothing.
The hope is to gather and redistribute outdoor clothing, so more people in Shetland have access to appropriate outdoor wear this winter. The appeal again aims to gather pre-loved, good quality outdoor clothing and footwear, for children of all ages and adults, during the month of October.
All donated items will then be available at an 'Outdoor Clothing Swap Shop' in the Gilbertson Park Games Hall in Lerwick on Sunday 16th November 2025. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event and build up their winter wardrobes. Other organisations will also attend the event to share information about various support services available throughout the isles over the winter months.
Donations of the following items are sought:
All items can be donated at the existing 'Kit for All' drop bins located at Shetland Recreational Trust leisure centres and pools throughout Shetland. All donations should be in good, clean and wearable condition.
Ali Robertson, RSPB Shetland Community Engagement Officer, said "Nature is a free resource for health and entertainment, but the cost of outdoor wear can be a barrier to the outdoors for some families and individuals. Having access to waterproof and warm clothing can make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors this winter, connecting with nature and enjoying the health benefits and learning opportunities that go along with it."
Louise Jamieson, SIC Active Schools Manager said "We were delighted with the turnout and positive feedback from this initiative last year that saw thousands of items donated. We'd be grateful for lots of donations of pre-loved clothing from the community again, and hope that plenty of people will get onboard, have a clear out, and pop their donations into the 'Kit For All' bins.
"We're also looking forward to seeing plenty of folk at the Outdoor Clothing Swap Shop in November, to pick up outdoor clothing for their families so they can enjoy the outdoors during winter."
