Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman participated on Thursday, 29 January 2026, in the meeting of the EUion Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) in Brussels.
Ministers discussed the latest developments in the context of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, including an address by the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, via video link. The discussions focused on the peace process, the continuation of comprehensive political, military, financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine, as well as additional measures to increase pressure on Russia.
The agenda also included the situation in the Middle East, encompassing Syria, Iran and Gaza, in light of current geopolitical circumstances, as well as developments in the Great Lakes region, with particular emphasis on the escalation of violence in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which poses a serious threat to regional security and stability.
In the context of the discussion on Ukraine, Grlić Radman highlighted the Croatian-Swedish initiative on care for Ukrainian war veterans. He noted that the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, responded positively to the joint letter sent by the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenergard, and Minister Grlić Radman, aimed at launching a coordinated European initiative to support Ukrainian veterans.
In this regard, a dedicated working meeting will be held on 21 April 2026, on the margins of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg.
Grlić Radman emphasized that Croatia views this initiative as a concrete, humane and strategic investment in Ukraine's long-term stability, drawing on its own experience of providing systematic care for Croatian war veterans. He underlined that Croatia's post-war experience has demonstrated the crucial role of war veterans in the processes of social stabilization, economic recovery and long-term development, which is of exceptional importance for Ukraine's future as well.
