Aggressive Contract Campaign and Strike Threat Led to Deal
Barrie, ON - After months of stalled contract talks, a strike threat, and an intense campaign, Barrie Transit workers, represented by ATU Local 1775, won a strong contract after an agreement reached between the Union and the company was overwhelmingly ratified today.
The new contract includes significant wage increases, better work-life balance, increased benefits, better safety, improved scheduling of bus routes, and other issues the Union pushed for. The deal was reached on Friday after Barrie Transit workers held a spirited practice picket to show their strength and unity in their fight for a fair contract.
"We are pleased to announce that after long and intense negotiations, our members have ratified a strong contract with MVT that recognizes the important role our members play in safely transporting people across Barrie," said Local 1775 President/Business Agent Cory Trew. "Our members worked hard for this contract, and we believe it strikes the right balance between meeting their needs and maintaining the high standard of service that the residents of Barrie deserve."
At the beginning of March, MVT continued their stalled tactics at the bargaining table, increasing tensions between the two sides. Their offers ignored the Union's key concerns. In response, the workers voted 96.5% in favour of authorizing a strike if necessary.
"Our members' unwavering unity is what delivered this deal, and it's a deal worth fighting for," said ATU International President John Costa. "Their dedication to each other, and to the riders who depend on Barrie Transit every day, is what this movement is made of. From the strike authorization vote to the practice picket, you showed what solidarity looks like. That's how we win."
