The Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC) announced today that the Emergency Winter Housing Assistance Program (EWHAP) will reopen on Monday, April 27, 2026, to support Davidson County residents who continue to face financial hardships following Winter Storm Fern and the State of Emergency declared on January 26, 2026.
Since the program launched, MAC has already awarded $339,657 in assistance to 238 customers, benefiting 570 total residents, with an average of $1,427 per customer. These emergency funds have provided critical early relief for households navigating storm-related disruptions.
EWHAP provides essential financial support to residents who experienced property damage, loss of income, hotel expenses, or other verified hardships. In addition to mortgage and rental support, EWHAP has now expanded to cover utility payments, including natural gas, electricity, and water. Residents previously approved for EWHAP housing assistance are also eligible for utility support.
Prior to reopening the application portal, MAC has implemented updated income guidelines to reflect 100% of the Area Median Income eligibility. Applicants who were previously denied because their income exceeded earlier limits may now qualify under the revised criteria. Additionally, individuals who missed required appointments during their initial application process will be offered another opportunity to receive assistance.
"As we prepare to reopen the application portal, our priority is ensuring that families who are still struggling in the aftermath of Winter Storm Fern have access to meaningful, timely support," said Jamekia Bies, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Action Commission. "These expanded options and updated guidelines reflect our commitment to removing barriers for residents and ensuring that no one in our community is left behind during the recovery process."
Because the program uses federal funding, EWHAP requires more structured documentation as proof of hardship than other aid programs. This documentation ensures accountability, transparency, and compliance with federal auditing requirements.
EWHAP was launched earlier this year with a $250,000 contribution from the Tennessee Titans, provided through their Home Field Advantage Catalyst Fund. Following that investment, the City of Nashville reallocated $931,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to MAC, expanding the agency's ability to serve residents with storm-related housing needs while funding remains available.
