RWJBarnabas Health Earns Hospital Safety Grades from The Leapfrog Group

Six Hospitals Receive A Rating; RWJUH Somerset and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Increase Letter Scores

West Orange, NJ, November 15, 2024 - Six RWJBarnabas Health facilities were awarded A Hospital Safety Score ratings by the Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The A-rated hospitals are Community Medical Center (CMC) in Toms River; Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) in Long Branch; Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus (MMCSC) in Lakewood; Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Hamilton; RWJUH Rahway; and RWJUH Somerset.

RWJUH Somerset rose from a B to an A rating. Newark Beth Israel Medical Center lifted its score from a C to a B rating. Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) in Livingston and Jersey City Medical Center also received B ratings.

It was RWJUH Rahway's seventh straight A rating and the fourth in a row for both CMC and MMCSC.

"RWJBarnabas Health is proud to lead the way in advancing patient safety and quality care across our health system," said Andy Anderson, MD, Executive Vice President, Chief Medical and Quality Officer at RWJBarnabas Health. "Our facilities' consistent achievements in performance and patient-centered care against national safety and quality benchmarks highlight our teams' dedication to upholding the highest standards of care at every level that result in the best possible patient outcomes," Dr. Anderson continued.

Leapfrog assigns an A, B, C, D, or F grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
