BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for travelers planning to fly out of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport during the busy summer period.

"We have been anticipating the busy summer travel period and are planning our security operations to ensure we are prepared for the surge of travelers who will be coming to the airport," said TSA Federal Security Director for Alabama Tara Corse. "TSA works closely with our airport and airline partners to ensure we are fully prepared for this busy season. We ask passengers to be prepared for the security screening procedure and to allow for plenty of time for each step of the travel process, as there is no substitute for arriving early."

TSA offers these tips for all flyers as they plan their upcoming summer travel:

  • Have a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID, such as a passport, when entering airport security checkpoints. All passengers 18 and older are required to present a TSA-accepted form of identification.
  • Enroll in TSA PreCheck® and opt in for TSA PreCheck Touchless ID for domestic travel to enjoy expedited screening and a more seamless travel experience.
  • Pack smart by starting with an empty bag. Passengers who start packing with an empty bag are less likely to bring prohibited items through the checkpoint. All liquids, aerosols and gels packed in carry-on bags must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less.

Travelers with disabilities or medical conditions may contact TSA Cares at (855) 787-2227 to request assistance while at the TSA checkpoint. For general information, visit TSA.gov.

Travelers uncertain about a specific item can use the free MyTSA app's "What Can I Bring?" tool, text "Travel" to AskTSA (275872), or message @AskTSA on X or Facebook Messenger.
