State v. Cameron Livsey
Decatur, Ga.- DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia, the FBI Atlanta Field Office and the DeKalb County Police Department announce the indictment of a former DeKalb County Police officer in connection with a cold case investigation from 2011.
On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, a DeKalb County Grand Jury indicted Cameron Livsey, 47, on charges of Rape, Aggravated Sodomy, two counts of Kidnapping, two counts of Armed Robbery, two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, two counts of Aggravated Sexual Battery, and two counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony for the alleged assaults of two teenage girls.
According to the preliminary investigation, on Saturday, October 8, 2011, a 17-year-old girl ran to an apartment complex on Lumby Drive and knocked on a door for help. Officers with the DeKalb County Police Department responded at around 10:30 p.m. The teenager told police that she and a 16-year-old friend had been walking through Exchange Park earlier that night when a man came up behind them and told them not to turn around because he had a gun.
The teen explained that the man took their bags, phones, and money before ordering them to take off their clothes and lie face down on the ground. The man then touched her and her friend inappropriately. After sexually assaulting both girls, he ordered the 17-year-old to get up and run away naked, warning her that if she turned around, he would shoot her.
DeKalb County Police confirmed the 16-year-old girl was missing and entered her name into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
Just after 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2011, DeKalb County officers responded to a call for help at an apartment complex off Panola Road in Stonecrest, about eight miles from Exchange Park. The man had dropped the 16-year-old victim off there.
She told officers that after the man ordered her friend to run away from the park, he made her put her clothes back on and get into his silver Dodge Charger. The girl said he told her to keep her head down, so she did not know where he had taken her, but she heard a garage door opening and then closing behind them. The man made her get out of the car and took her from the attached garage into the house where he raped her and forced her to perform oral sex at gunpoint. After the assault, the man tried to destroy the evidence of his crime by making the teenager take a shower before getting her dressed again.
Police transported the 16-year-old to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston where medical professionals performed a sexual assault exam and recovered male DNA. The DNA profile was uploaded into the national Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) with no match.
Federal Charges Lead to a CODIS Hit
On April 30, 2026, agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Sgt. Cameron Livsey on one count of Intent to View Images of Minors Engaged in Sexually Explicit Conduct. Livsey resigned in lieu of termination following his federal arrest.
Under federal law, suspects arrested on federal charges have a DNA sample taken and uploaded to CODIS.
In late August, the DA's Office was notified that Livsey's DNA was a match to the 2011 cold case rape.
Defendant Livsey will soon be scheduled for an arraignment on the state charges against him.
"Cases like this shake our faith in the criminal justice system and the people entrusted to work within it," said District Attorney Sherry Boston. "I hope that Livsey's indictment shows that here in DeKalb County no one is above the law and those who try to use their positions of power to victimize others will be held responsible."
