Launch of Financial Education for Migrant Workers Communities in Italy

ROME (ILO News) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Research Institute for International Policy (Centro Studi di Politica Internazionale - CeSPI) are launching a new programme to strengthen the capacity of Embassies, Consulates and community leaders to provide information and training on financial education to migrant communities and migrant workers in Italy through the creation of a network of certified community trainers.

Through this initiative, the CeSPI and the ILO reaffirm their commitment to promoting financial inclusion as a key component of decent work, social inclusion and economic empowerment of migrant workers.

The programme builds on a long-standing collaboration between the ILO and CeSPI that focuses on the promotion of financial inclusion of vulnerable groups, particularly migrant workers. The initiative is implemented within the framework of the CeSPI's National Observatory on the Financial Inclusion of Migrants and the ILO's Social Finance Programme. The programme is funded by the Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund (AMIF) 2021-2027 and by the Italian Ministry of Interior through the project "Finanza Inclusiva per l'Integrazione" (Inclusive finance for integration)

The training programme introduces the ILO's internationally recognized methodology for training of trainers in financial education. The objective is to equip selected participants with the knowledge, skills and practical tools that are needed to deliver high-quality financial education within their own communities.

The programme combines technical training, mentoring and a certification process. Participants who successfully complete the full pathway - including supervised replication of training and a national certification workshop - will be eligible to obtain an ILO certification as trainer in financial education.

The initiative seeks to create community-based multipliers capable of supporting migrant workers and their families in understanding and accessing financial services safely and effectively. The training curriculum addresses topics such as personal financial management, budgeting, savings, responsible borrowing, digital financial services and financial planning.

As part of the programme, the ILO's financial education materials are being specifically adapted to the Italian context and to the needs of migrant communities living and working in Italy. This includes the development of locally relevant case studies, examples and learning tools.

The first round of the training of trainers programme will take place in Rome at CeSPI's headquarters from 29 to 31 May and will involve participants from Spanish speaking countries of the Latin American and Caribbean continent, including officials of Embassies and Consulates in Italy of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico, as well as representatives of associations and communities of migrants. The second round will take place from 11 to 13 June 2026.
