Philadelphia, PA − June 24, 2026 − Senator Vincent Hughes, Senate Democratic Appropriations Chair, announced $10.6 million dollars in funding for affordable housing projects throughout Philadelphia and Montgomery County. The funding was awarded by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) from the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) program.
"The most significant action we can take to address Pennsylvania's affordable housing crisis is to invest," said Senator Hughes. "Yes, we must also implement policy and accountability measures, but the biggest way to move the needle right now is to build and rehabilitate our housing stock. This $10M for Philadelphia and Montco will have a tremendous, tangible impact in the housing space."
PHFA recently announced a total of $93.4 million in PHARE funding for 432 housing and community development initiatives across all 67 counties in Pennsylvania. The funding will support:
In 2024, Senate and House Democrats and Governor Shapiro included a $10 million annual increase until 2027 for the PHARE Fund, raising the cap to $100 million by 2027.
This round of affordable housing funding further supports the overall goals of Pennsylvania Senate Democrats' Affordability Action Plan and Governor Shapiro's Housing Action Plan. State Democrats and Governor Shapiro remain hyper-focused on implementing policies and investments that address the real affordability concerns of Pennsylvanians and put money back in their pockets.
Senator Hughes explained, "People want real results. Our caucus is actively fighting for issues and funding that will directly impact community members and how they're able to live. This PHARE funding is a great example of what we can achieve when we listen and put the needs of communities first."
