Aurora residents invited to find their voice at interactive Boards and Commissions Convention event on Aug.6

Aurora residents interested in making a difference in their community are invited to attend the city's first ever Boards and Commissions Convention next week.

This special event, which is free and open to all Aurora residents, will provide a one-stop shop opportunity for attendees to learn how they can help shape the future of Aurora by serving on one of the city's volunteer boards and commissions. Representatives from 22 boards and commissions will be available to answer questions, discuss their work, and explain how residents can sign up to join these volunteer groups.

The event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway. Light refreshments will be served. No need to register in advance. Residents can simply stop by and learn.

Boards and commissions play an important role in local government, including advising the Aurora City Council on issues that affect the community. Volunteers review policies, programs and community issues, provide recommendations to City Council, and bring valuable community perspectives and professional expertise to the decision-making process.

"Aurora residents taking an active role in city government is essential to building and maintaining a community that meets the needs of everyone who calls our city home," Mayor Mike Coffman said. "I encourage everyone to come to this great event and learn about ways they can get involved."

Whether residents are passionate about arts and culture, public safety, planning and development, parks and recreation, housing, sustainability, historic preservation, youth and education, civil service, or community relations, there are opportunities to serve in a variety of areas.

Serving on a board or commission gives residents the chance to:

• Develop leadership and public service experience.
• Build relationships with community leaders.
• Share their professional expertise and lived experiences.
• Help ensure Aurora's diverse community is represented in local decision-making.

Ward II City Council Member Amy Wiles served on the Human Relations Commission before running for council and has seen the impact residents can make when they volunteer their time.

"Being a member of the Human Relations Commission gave me a better understanding of our city government and demonstrated the positive impact we can make when we all work together on common goals," Councilmember Wiles said. "Volunteering your time to be part of our many unique boards and commissions is a deeply rewarding experience and I encourage people to find an opportunity to get involved at our Boards and Commissions Convention."
