Center for Resiliency STEM camp inspires through hands-on learning

From solving math challenges and conducting chemistry experiments to exploring engineering, coding and physics, dozens of middle and high school students spent two weeks this summer discovering the possibilities of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at Lamar University's Youth Resilience STEM Camp.

Held July 20-24 and July 27-31, the free day camp welcomed incoming sixth- through 10th-grade students to campus for an immersive week of hands-on learning designed to spark curiosity and build confidence in STEM fields. Supported by a contribution from ExxonMobil, the program connected campers with Lamar University faculty, student interns and staff through interactive lessons and collaborative activities.

Throughout the week, students rotated through a variety of STEM disciplines. Campers strengthened problem-solving skills during math sessions and educational games, gained laboratory experience through chemistry experiments, explored engineering concepts in Lamar University's labs, and learned the fundamentals of MATLAB programming and data analysis. Additional sessions featured investigative science activities, physics demonstrations and presentations highlighting undergraduate research opportunities through Lamar University's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program.

Beyond the classroom and laboratory, campers participated in daily team-building activities that encouraged collaboration, communication and critical thinking while providing opportunities to build friendships with peers who share an interest in STEM. A campus tour also introduced students to university life and the academic opportunities available at Lamar University.

The camp was led by Dr. Sujing Wang, Dr. Raymond Doe and Dr. Lucy Tsado, with instruction provided by faculty members from across the university, including mathematics, chemistry, engineering and physics. Their collaborative approach gave students exposure to a wide range of STEM disciplines while demonstrating how those fields intersect to solve real-world challenges.

By removing financial barriers through free enrollment, the Youth Resilience STEM Camp continues Lamar University's commitment to expanding access to STEM education and encouraging young learners to envision themselves as future scientists, engineers, researchers and innovators.

The week concluded with awards and assessments recognizing students' participation and growth throughout the program. While campers left with new scientific knowledge and technical skills, organizers hope they also departed with something even more valuable: the confidence to pursue future opportunities in STEM and the inspiration to continue exploring the world through curiosity, creativity and discovery.
