Kansas City, Mo. (June 24, 2026) - The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) has announced the appointment of KCMO City Councilman Johnathan Duncan to its Board of Commissioners. Appointed by Mayor Quinton Lucas, Councilman Duncan represents Kansas City's 6th Council District.

Prior to serving on the City Council, Duncan served as Director of Administrative Operations at the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Headquarters where he assisted veterans in all 50 states, Europe, Pacific Areas, Puerto Rico and Panama. An Army combat veteran who served in Iraq and Africa, Duncan returned home from Iraq at 21 as part of the longest continuous deployment of any United States military unit during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Since 2020 Duncan has served as a leader and community organizer with KC Tenants, the city-wide tenant union. Through his community organizing work, Duncan has seen firsthand the impact public transportation has on individuals and the collective community.

The KCATA is governed by a 10-member Board of Commissioners, five from Missouri and five from Kansas. Commissioners are limited to two consecutive four-year terms. The Board is responsible for adopting all general policies of the Authority, including the adoption of annual capital and operating budgets, establishing strategic direction and goals for the Authority, approval of significant agreements and contracts, and the selection of a President/CEO.
