MaineHealth responds to questions raised about its use of a Palantir Technologies product

PORTLAND, ME - Ahead of a scheduled rally tomorrow sponsored by the union representing nurses at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland, MaineHealth made clear today how it uses a Palantir Technologies product on behalf of patients who experience insurance denials.

It is MaineHealth's responsibility to ensure patients receive timely, appropriate care and to support clinicians in navigating an increasingly complex insurance environment. In recent years, prior authorization requirements and claim denials have grown significantly, often delaying care and adding strain for both patients and care teams.

MaineHealth works with Palantir to help identify patterns in these denials and to compare them against insurers' own policies. This allows MaineHealth to more quickly challenge inappropriate denials on behalf of patients, helping to reduce delays that can impact patient care. To date, this tool has helped overturn inappropriate coverage denials for thousands of MaineHealth patients for medically necessary care.

The role of the tool is limited to this one function. Palantir's technology is not involved with clinical decisions, nor does Palantir own or control MaineHealth data. Importantly, MaineHealth maintains strict safeguards to protect patient information. All data is handled in accordance with federal privacy laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. MaineHealth retains full control over how data is accessed and used, and it is not shared outside of MaineHealth's oversight.

Overall, artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly evolving, and as such, MaineHealth is continuously evaluating the available products and their capabilities, always putting the needs of our patients and caregivers at the forefront.
