AG Labrador Announces Sentencing of Canyon County Man for Possession of Child Pornography

BOISE, ID - Attorney General Raúl Labrador has announced that James Anthony Halma, 27, was convicted of two (2) counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child by Possession of Sexually Exploitative Material (Child Pornography) and one (1) count of Possession of Generated AI CSAM. The Possession of Sexually Exploitative Material is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The Possession of Generated AI CSAM is a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison. Halma was sentenced on March 12, 2026, by Canyon County District Court Judge Gabriel McCarthy.

In October of 2024, the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit received a CyberTip indicating that a Kik account, later identified as belonging to Halma, had files containing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). After obtaining search warrants, officers were able to seize Halma's digital devices. Forensic examiners from the Office of the Attorney General were able to locate approximately one hundred (100) files containing CSAM on Halma's phone, depicting the sexual abuse of children under the age of sixteen and as young as three being sexually abused. Judge McCarthy sentenced Halma to a total of twenty-five (25) years in prison and ordered that he be eligible for parole after three (3) years. Halma will be required to register as a sex offender pursuant to Idaho law.

The investigation was led by ICAC Commander Lauren Lane of the Attorney General's ICAC Task Force. Commander Lane and the ICAC Task Force were assisted by various agencies, including the Nampa Police Department, the Canyon County Sheriff's Office, and the Meridian Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General James Haws.
