Sustainability Efforts Continue at IAAPA Expo Europe 2024

IAAPA remains dedicated to minimizing the environmental impact of its Expos, a commitment recognized in 2023 when IAAPA Expo Europe in Vienna received the Austrian Ecolabel for Green Meetings and Green Events. As the IAAPA team prepares to kick off IAAPA Expo Europe 2024 in Amsterdam, IAAPA continues to honor its sustainability mission, aiming for transparent improvements and building on successful initiatives, all while gathering insight on the association's eco-friendly efforts. These advancements are only possible through close collaboration with like-minded partners.

"We are aware of our responsibility in achieving more climate-conscious event operations and creating positive social change. With sustainability on the forefront for us all, we work closely with multiple partners, including event venues, stand builders, exhibitors, and many others that adhere to comprehensive sustainability policies. We also have created educational opportunities and engage young audiences through our Expo." says Peter van der Schans, executive director and vice president of IAAPA EMEA.

Environmentally Conscious Vendors

IAAPA carefully selects event partners for Expos well in advance, considering sustainability among the criteria. Some of the eco-friendly commitments of IAAPA partner companies include:

  • Logistics and Transport: Freight is consolidated and transported in shared vehicles to reduce the number of trips, while fuel-efficient forklifts are utilized where available. On-site, empty packing materials are stored to encourage reuse, and local workforces are prioritized.
  • Stand Construction: IAAPA's stand builder uses reusable materials like Aluvision, certified carpentry, PVC-free canvases, and rents its furniture and carpeting options.

A Sustainable Venue

RAI Amsterdam is the host of IAAPA Expo Europe in 2024-and their own social and environmental goals, combined with the policies of the city of Amsterdam, are part of wider efforts to decrease the environmental impact of the show. RAI Amsterdam is currently undergoing continuous improvement to become carbon-neutral, and already uses 100% green electricity and sensors to reduce water use.

Green Transportation Options

Thanks to the convenient location of RAI Amsterdam, participants are encouraged to use public transportation, with both the Amsterdam RAI railway station and metro lines just minutes away. Attendees will also be informed of these options on the IAAPA Expo Europe web page, as well as the IAAPA Connect+ app.

Eco-Certified Accommodation Partners

IAAPA has partnered with several eco-certified hotels located near the venue, offering exclusive discounts to attendees. These accommodations meet strict environmental standards, ensuring a greener stay for participants.

Exhibitor Sustainability Commitments

The 2024 Expo boasts its largest show floor to date, with nearly 680 exhibitors spanning nearly 18,600 square meters. More than 343 exhibitors have committed to sustainability practices by signing forms that pledge resource-saving efforts, waste reduction, and environmentally conscious behavior. Its recommendations include renting equipment, using recycled or reusable materials, avoiding excessive printing, and implementing thorough post-event waste management.

 Meatless Thursday and Catering Efforts

In a bid to reduce the show's carbon footprint, IAAPA is introducing a "Meatless Thursday" on the final day of the Expo. This single meat-free day will save approximately 7,704 kilograms of CO2 emissions, equivalent to a diesel car driving 31,000 km. All meals will be served in reusable or biodegradable containers, with proper waste separation on-site.

Waste Management and Recycling

The move-in and move-out phases of an Expo can generate significant waste, so IAAPA works closely with contractors to ensure sustainable operations. Attendees and exhibitors are also encouraged to recycle their badges and lanyards at designated recycling stations throughout the venue.

Empowering Future Talent

IAAPA's commitment to inclusivity and talent development is a primary focus area in 2024. The Show Ambassador Program continues, and a new initiative offers students free access to the Expo on Thursday, Sept. 26. Additionally, IAAPA will fundraise for the IAAPA Foundation to support promising emerging talent.

We would like to thank our partners for making these sustainability initiatives possible. Learn more about IAAPA Expo Europe's sustainability actions here, and to register for IAAPA Expo Europe, visit IAAPA.org/IAAPAExpoEurope.
