Working Families First

Costly Cuts
This week, new provisions of President Trump's Big Ugly Bill took effect, changing eligibility for SNAP and Medicaid while shifting higher administrative costs onto states. These changes threaten the food assistance and health care that millions of Americans rely on-and even deeper cuts and new work requirements are still ahead.

President Trump and his sycophants in Congress celebrated this law, but there is nothing to celebrate about making it harder for families to put food on the table or receive the care they need. Democrats will continue fighting to protect Medicaid, defend SNAP and ensure Americans do not go hungry to finance tax breaks for the wealthiest.

Speaker Emerita Pelosi condemns Republican cuts to Americans' food assistance and health care in September of 2025.

Labor's Champion
It was a pleasure to join labor leaders and friends to celebrate Lee Saunders as he retires after fourteen years leading AFSCME. Lee always understood that the union's strength comes from its members-from nurses and sanitation workers to the tens of thousands of Californians who are AFSCME members.

During the pandemic, Lee and I worked together to secure state and local funding through the American Rescue Plan, saving public-sector jobs and protecting essential services. As AFSCME's first African American president, he carried forward the intertwined legacies of labor and civil rights while always keeping workers and their families at the heart of every fight.

Speaker Emerita Pelosi thanks retiring AFSCME President Lee Saunders for his commitment to workers.

Problems, Not Paychecks
This week's dismal jobs report offered another warning that President Trump's economy is failing working families. With job growth slowing and costs still too high, Americans are being asked to work harder while falling further behind.

Instead of working to lower costs and create good-paying jobs, Republicans sent Congress home for the fall. After handing enormous tax breaks to billionaires, they skipped town just as working families need relief the most.
