The Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) has published its Annual Report for 2024-2025, highlighting the strategic importance of the Greek fleet in global maritime trade. The report presents detailed statistics and insights into the fleet's composition and its critical role in supporting the global, European, and national economy.
According to the report, in 2024, global maritime trade rose by 2.1%, reaching 12.6 billion tonnes, with dry bulk and tanker sectors leading the volume. The Greek fleet, comprising 5,700 vessels, continues to be a world leader, representing 20% of the global fleet and 61% of the EU fleet.
UGS emphasized Greece's contribution to energy, food, and supply chain security, and its leadership in the sector's green transition through investments in climate-friendly technologies.
The report also outlines UGS's policy proposals on key challenges, including decarbonisation, maritime safety, EU maritime policy, ship financing, trade, and workforce development.
