Construction at the Austin Convention Center has officially entered a new phase with the commencement of diaphragm wall (D-wall) activities. This critical milestone marks the transition from demolition and site preparation to the commencement of true structural construction on the project. The D-wall system will serve as the foundation and earth retention structure for the new convention center, providing support for future excavation and below-grade facilities.
Over the past week, crews have begun trenching operations in Area E (on the east side, between 2nd & 3rd Streets), utilizing specialized equipment to cut deep, narrow trenches that will be filled with reinforced concrete. Initial concrete pours have already taken place, formwork is being set, and rebar cages are being installed to strengthen the wall panels. The existing building drilled pier, and foundation removals in adjacent areas are also progressing, ensuring a clear path for continued D-wall installation in the coming weeks. Together, these activities represent more than just technical progress; they signal the official start of construction for the redevelopment project. With foundation work underway, the team is moving confidently into the next stage of delivering a modern, world-class convention facility for the City of Austin.
