August 29 - Update from Colorado Department of State Regarding “Find my voter registration” Tool

Denver, August 29, 2026 - The Department of State published an update to the "find my voter registration" tool on August 14, 2026. When the tool was updated, preexisting limits preventing access to confidential voter profiles were inadvertently overridden. Upon discovery, the Department immediately fixed the tool so that confidential voter profiles were no longer searchable. In order to access a voter profile, specific information had to be input into the tool (name, zip code, and full birth date).

In its review, the Department determined 59 confidential voter profiles were accessed. The majority of these instances, but not all, were voters accessing their own information. This is based on what the Department has heard back from voters to date, in addition to IP address analysis. The Department reached out to every impacted voter.

The Department has no information to suggest any imminent public safety issues related to this matter. Nonetheless, out of an abundance of caution, on August 28, 2026, the Department enlisted the assistance (PDF) of Colorado State Patrol and the Denver District Attorney's Office to ensure that any risk is completely examined and addressed.

To learn more about immediate steps the Department took to address this issue, please see our August 27 press release.
