(May 14, 2026) Sacramento, CA - The California Chamber of Commerce today issued the following statement in response to Gov. Gavin Newsom's revised state budget:

We appreciate the challenge faced by the Governor in offering a state spending plan in these uncertain times.

From both a policy and political perspective, the road ahead is unclear: an unsettled economy, billions of dollars in costly proposed tax increases aimed for both state and local ballots, and a divisive election season in California and across the nation.

State leaders should let some of the dust settle surrounding those flashpoints before adopting the new budget's proposed tax increases.

These unexpected expenses will burden our entrepreneurs and employers who are driving higher-than-expected revenues and will likely get passed on to consumers already struggling in the face of California's ongoing affordability crisis.
