Peoria City/County Landfill #2 set to close soon

The Peoria City/County Landfill will reach capacity soon. The landfill closure will not impact residents that have their waste picked up curbside under a contract through their municipality. It will impact residents who utilize the free load program, bring construction debris, or dispose of large items at the landfill.

When the landfill closes, and before the transfer station opens, there will be changes to the free load program and how construction debris is managed. The last day for free load and cash customers at the Peoria City/County Landfill is April 19, 2025.

After April 19, residents may take a weekly free load to the following locations:

• Indian Creek Landfill: 24501 McMullen Rd, Hopedale • open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m.-12 p.m.

• Wigand Transfer Station: 19908 N Route 29, Chillicothe • open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

The free load program is for household waste only.

The free load program will transition to the new transfer station once it comes online. This program is for private residential waste only and does not include construction or demolition materials. County residents are allowed one free load per week, not to exceed 580 pounds.

Construction debris

After April 19, 2025, construction debris may be taken to:

• Wigand Transfer Station: 19908 N Route 29, Chillicothe

• Indian Creek Landfill: 24501 McMullen Rd, Hopedale

• Tazewell Transfer Station: 3550 E Washington St, East Peoria

Gate rates may vary.

New trash and recycling services available countywide

GFL

As part of the negotiated contract, GFL will offer all Peoria County residents in unincorporated areas the option to sign up for curbside trash and recycling service at a flat rate of $42.50 per month with no additional fees. This offer is open to all residents not already under a municipal contract with their city or town. The subscription program will be available once the landfill closes. Call GFL at 309-688-0780 to sign up for service.

Waste Management

Waste Management currently offers curbside trash and recycling services for all residents in unincorporated areas. Rates vary by location. Sign up at wm.com/curbside or call 1-855-965-2671.

Residents are not required to sign up for these programs. You may continue using a different hauler or utilizing the free load program.

Next Steps

GFL has site approval from the State of Illinois EPA for the transfer station. It is on a property in Pottstown already approved for hazardous waste. The transfer station is estimated to open in 2026.

The building of Landfill #3 remains planned and under contract with GFL, though now pushed back approximately 10 years. State agencies are reviewing planning and permitting changes for Landfill #3 due to new abandoned surface mine information discovered since the original Landfill #3 siting process was undertaken. The transfer station serves to ensure residents' trash needs are met.
