Airport Travel Tips for 2025 Inauguration Visitors

Passengers at Reagan National and Dulles International Airports should be prepared for additional crowds and congestion from Friday, January 17, through Tuesday, January 21, for the 2025 presidential inauguration that is expected to bring an influx of passengers to both Washington, D.C., airports. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend travelers will also contribute to increased passenger loads. Traffic volumes and wait times may be greater than usual during this timeframe.

The Airports Authority is working with airlines and airport partners to make the passenger experience as smooth as possible during the Inauguration. With the opening of the Silver Line two years ago serving Dulles International, Metrorail is now available at both airports, providing a convenient travel mode. Other ground transportation options are posted on the Reagan National and Dulles International websites. Additionally, drivers are encouraged to avoid airport roads if they do not have business at the airport.

Airport travel tips, January 17-21

  • When flying through the airports, Metro will be the best option to access inaugural activities. Expect numerous road closures throughout Washington, D.C.
  • Before coming to the airport, check with your airline to ensure your flight is on time. Use smartphone apps to check in early and review baggage policies.
  • Arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight. Expect large crowds and long lines.
  • Make a parking reservation online in advance to guarantee a space if parking.

Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, are expected to be the peak travel days departing Reagan National and Dulles International as Inauguration visitors check out of hotels and travel to the airports. Transportation Security Administration screeners and airline customer service representatives are preparing to handle increased passenger loads. Airport staff and volunteers will help manage crowds and provide directions inside terminals. Selected airport concessionaires will also be open extended hours at Reagan National.

Travelers needing help inside the airport can visit information counters staffed by Travelers Aid volunteers or check FlyReagan.com or FlyDulles.com. In addition, updates will be posted on the airport X feeds @Reagan_Airport and @Dulles_Airport.
