National Walk to School Day is Wednesday, Oct. 8th News General, News Mayor Office Mayor Jane Castor and Superintendent Van Ayers join Sidewalk Stompers for National Walk to[...]

Sidewalk Stompers will celebrate National Walk to School Day on October 8th with Mayor Jane Castor and Superintendent Van Ayres by welcoming students walking and biking to Roosevelt Elementary School.

The event will mark Sidewalk Stompers' 10th year hosting a walking program at Roosevelt as the school celebrates its 100th birthday. Roosevelt and Sidewalk Stompers are proud of their shared commitment to student wellbeing.

"National Walk to School Day recognizes the importance of giving children safe and healthy routes to school," said Emily Hinsdale, President of Sidewalk Stompers. "Keeping kids active and engaged in their community improves not just their own health, but the health of our whole region."

A group of Roosevelt parents began hosting walk/bike to school events at Roosevelt Elementary during the 2015-16 school year. After seeing the number of student walkers more than double in the first year, the group decided to share the program with other schools, launching non-profit Sidewalk Stompers. As a result of this increased student pedestrian activity, Sidewalk Stompers was able to secure new crosswalks, stop signs, crossing guards, and additional signage for Roosevelt. Roosevelt continues to report 250-300 students participating in weekly Walk to School Wednesdays.

Hillsborough County has a total of 35 district schools registered to participate in National Walk to School Day in 2025.

Sidewalk Stompers would like to thank the engineering firm AtkinsRealis for sponsoring this year's events.

Launched in 2018, Sidewalks Stompers is an award-winning advocacy nonprofit, with programs that improve student health, mental wellness, community connections, and road safety. The organization's vision is a new generation engaged in active transportation, growing up healthier and better invested in their community.
