Kaptur Announces Over $5.8 Million Secured for Northwest Ohio Health Programs and Medical ResearchPress ReleaseJobs and the EconomyHealth Care

Toledo, OH - Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) announced that several Northwest Ohio nonprofits, researchers, small businesses and localities will receive awards through the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). With a total of $5,837,308 in Federal investment, these awards represent significant support for the growth and advancement of public health in Ohio's 9th District.
"I am grateful to be able to partner with so many organizations and institutions across Northwest Ohio to advance medical research and increase the quality and access to health care for people of all ages and backgrounds," said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). "Our local health centers, programs, and medical research initiatives strengthen our communities and are living proof of the life-saving power of community action and scientific innovation. These major Federal investments today mean a brighter, stronger future for all the tomorrows to come."
The awards include:
  • $340,486 for Erie County's Assisted Outpatient Treatment program
  • $60,000 for Sylvania Community Action Team's substance abuse education
  • $216,770 for the University of Toledo's research on antifungal drug development under Dr. Ronald Viola
  • $375,000 for Erie County Department of Health to conduct community-based substance use prevention services
  • $1,096,097 for Anatomy Operating LLC's research on detecting and labeling skin cancer cells in a standardized manner
  • $573,750 for the University of Toledo's research on JAK2, a hormone that regulates breast cancer, under Dr. Maria Diakonova
  • $1,473,759 for the University of Toledo's Area Health Education Centers Point of Service maintenance and enhancement
  • $63,896 for the University of Toledo to recruit and train industrial hygienist students, professionals that evaluate workplace health hazards
  • $380,870 for the University of Toledo's research on speeding up useful chemical reactions to create more eco-friendly plastic ingredients under Dr. Michael Young
  • $560,925 for the University of Toledo's research on nerve functionality and axon regeneration after nerve or spinal related injuries under Dr. Guofa Liu
  • $587,758 for the University of Toledo's research on therapeutic strategies for Protocadherin-19-Clustering Epilepsy, a disease that is characterized by early onset seizures, autism, and cognitive impairment. It is conducted by Dr. Wei Niu.
  • $107,997 for the University of Toledo's research on virus-induced heart disease during fetal development conducted by Dr. Zachary Hilt
As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, Congresswoman Kaptur has a long track record of bringing vital federal dollars back home to the Northwest Ohio community. In May of this year, she secured over $7.7 Million in similar US HHS awards for various local health center programs, Head Start programs, and medical research.
Congresswoman Kaptur has also been instrumental in delivering federal support to University of Toledo research efforts. UToledo was recently recognized with as an R1, top-tier university for Doctoral Universities: Very High Research Activity in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
