Communications Manager Mike Machado Keeps Bellflower Connected

For more than 25 years, Mike Machado has served the Bellflower community in a variety of roles, guided by a consistent belief that local government works best when residents feel informed, connected and supported.

Mike's journey with the City began in 1999 as a locker attendant at the Bellflower Aquatic Center. What started as a part-time position evolved into a career defined by service, growth and institutional knowledge. Over more than two decades, he advanced through roles supporting facilities, recreation programs and special events, gaining firsthand insight into how City services impact families, older adults, youth and local businesses. That broad experience shaped his understanding of the community and reinforced his commitment to service.

Mike attended elementary school in Bellflower and graduated from St. John Bosco High School before earning his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from California State University, Long Beach in 2006. Rather than pursue opportunities elsewhere, he chose to reinvest his education and experience back into the community that shaped him.

Throughout his tenure, Mike has focused on strengthening how the City communicates with residents. From refining the Parks and Recreation brochure to helping evolve it into Bellflower City Life, his work has centered on making City information easier for residents to find, understand and use.

In his current role as Communications & Marketing Manager, he continues to prioritize outreach that informs and connects residents, whether through print publications, digital newsletters, social media or the My Bellflower app. His approach emphasizes clarity, consistency and engagement, helping residents better understand available resources and opportunities.

At its core, Mike's work reflects a simple principle: public service is about meeting people where they are and ensuring they have the information they need. By supporting departments across the organization and aligning communications with the City's Strategic Plan, he helps strengthen transparency and community connection.

When asked why he has dedicated his career to Bellflower, Mike points to the connection he has had with the community since childhood. "Bellflower has been part of my life since I was a kid. I went to school here, started working for the City as a teenager and have spent my career serving this community. Public service gives me the opportunity to give back to a place that has shaped so much of my life."

Outside of work, Mike's favorite role is being a husband and dad. He is married to his best friend and appreciates everything she does to keep their family on track. Together, they are raising three boys involved in soccer, flag football, baseball and BMX racing. Their youngest, now almost 2, keeps the family on their toes with his growing personality and endless energy. No matter how full life gets, Mike says there is no place he would rather be than with his crew.
