WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the Homeowner Energy Freedom Act, led by Congressman Craig Goldman (R-TX) has passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 210-199. This bill would repeal Biden-era energy regulations on home appliances that restricted consumer choice and drove up the cost of new homes.
"For many Americans, the American Dream of homeownership feels out of reach. Costly regulations imposed by the Biden Administration have driven up the price of homes. I'm proud to lead the Homeowner Energy Freedom Act, a bill that could reduce the costs of new homes by up to $31,000. I'm grateful to my colleagues for their support and hope the Senate swiftly passes this legislation to bring real relief to American families," said Congressman Craig Goldman.
"Today, House Republicans took another critical step to repeal costly Biden-era energy mandates and reduce the burden of home prices for American families. Home buyers and builders will no longer be burdened by unnecessary green regulations and electrification mandates that drive up costs and limit choice. Rep. Goldman's Homeowner Energy Freedom Act paves the path forward for affordable homeownership, restores common sense in our energy policy, and ensures responsible, efficient use of taxpayer dollars," said Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (LA-04).
"The Biden Administration's Inflation Reduction Act included radical 'Green New Scam' mandates to essentially ban gas appliances and force states to adopt unworkable building codes, forcing consumers to switch to more expensive electric alternatives and destroying housing affordability. Americans should be able to choose the options that best suit their needs, not have Washington force an electrification agenda upon them. I'm grateful to Rep. Goldman for bringing forward this bill to repeal these costly provisions and protect consumer choice, and am happy to see it pass the House," said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (LA-01).
"Under Joe Biden, the Democrats pushed Green New Scam policies onto the American people, ripping away consumer choice, driving up costs, and making life unaffordable-especially for homeowners. Thankfully, House Republicans and President Trump are undoing this damage and lowering costs for the American people. By passing Congressman Goldman's Homeowner Energy Freedom Act, House Republicans are repealing burdensome Biden regulations, restoring consumer choice, and stopping wasteful government spending. Thank you, Congressman Goldman, for leading the way with this important legislation," said House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (MN-06).
"House Republicans are bringing housing costs down by stopping Washington from shoving radical mandates down the throats of American families. The Democrats' energy agenda jacked up regulatory costs, strangled home construction, and pushed the American Dream further out of reach. This bill rips out the red tape, puts families back in charge of their own homes and budgets, and tells the federal government to get out of the way. Americans don't need bureaucrats deciding how they live. They need affordable homes and a fair shot," said House Chairwoman Lisa McClain (MI-09).
"For too long, burdensome regulations established by the Biden-Harris Administration have driven up costs for home buyers. The Homeowner Energy Freedom Act puts an end to expensive building code mandates that push homeownership out of reach for millions of hardworking families. Thank you to Congressman Goldman for his work on lowering prices in communities across the country," said House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Brett Guthrie (KY-02).
Background:
The Homeowner Energy Freedom Act would repeal and rescind all unobligated funding in Sections 50122, 50123, and 50131 of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Through these provisions, the Biden Administration allocated more than $5 billion to subsidize the electrification of home appliances, effectively restricting the installation of gas stoves and water heaters in new homes. These regulations restricted consumer choice and increased the cost of new homes by up to $31,000.
Support:
This bill is co-sponsored by Reps. Jake Ellzey (TX-06) and Dan Crenshaw (TX-02) and is supported by the National Association of Home Builders, the National Taxpayers Union, and the National Energy & Fuels Institute.
