Sen. Moran Hosts USDA Under Secretary Lindberg to Showcase Kansas’ Role in International Food Aid

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (Kan.) - a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry - today joined Suzanne Alexander on RFD-TV to discuss hosting Luke Lindberg, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs, in Kansas. During the visit, they toured agricultural facilities at Kansas State University alongside U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (R-KS-01) and participated in a roundtable discussion with Kansas commodity groups on the importance of the Food for Peace program and the role that Kansas plays in supporting international food aid.

"Kansas has a special place in its heart for food hunger programs, including particularly Food for Peace," said Sen. Moran. "I remember driving through - just like the farmer in St. Francis that helped start this program - a couple years ago, in a small town, Kensington, I drove by the elevator and saw grain sorghum piled higher than the elevator and yet recognized that people around the world go to bed hungry."

"We take those grains and feed people, and that certainly helps them and creates a relationship that the United States needs with developing countries," continued Sen. Moran. "But it also is an economic opportunity to put grain into the market at a time in which fertilizer prices, as you just highlighted, but the cost of production is so high, and the commodity prices are so low."

Items to note:

  • Sen. Moran has long advocated for Food for Peace to be administered by USDA, and he introduced legislation with Sen. Hoeven and Rep. Mann last year to move the program to USDA permanently. A similar provision was included in the Farm Bill that was approved by the House of Representatives.

  • In March 2026, Sens. Moran and Hoeven met with Under Secretary Lindberg to discuss USDA's plan to administer Food for Peace and the resources needed to support the program going forward.
