East Newark Borough recently closed on a $2 million loan with the New Jersey Water Bank to replace up to 80 lead service lines in its drinking water system. The final number of lines replaced will depend on the results of ongoing inventory efforts, a separate EPA grant-funded replacement project, and the cost to replace each line.
Under State law, drinking water service lines and appurtenances made of lead and/or galvanized metal must be replaced. These materials are a significant source of lead in drinking water, which poses a particularly serious public health risk, especially for pregnant women and children.
