SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In response to yesterday's announcement that Senator Monique Limón has been elected the next President pro Tempore of the California State Senate, Equality California Executive Director Tony Hoang released the following statement:
"Equality California congratulates Senator Monique Limón on her historic election as the next President pro Tempore of the California Senate - the first woman of color ever to hold this position. Senator Limón has been a steadfast champion for LGBTQ+ Californians, immigrants, women, and working families throughout her career in public service. We are thrilled to continue working alongside her in this new role to advance full-lived equality for all.
We also extend our deepest gratitude to Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire for his leadership and commitment to protecting and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community. He has been a true ally and partner in our fight, and we look forward to continuing to work with him during the remainder of time as Pro Tem and as a California State Senator.
We are confident that under Senator Limón's leadership, the California Senate will continue to be a force for progress. At a time when our rights are facing renewed and growing threats under the Trump administration, Equality California looks forward to working with her to defend our rights, expand protections, and ensure that every LGBTQ+ person can live with safety, dignity and freedom."
