Explorers program at AdventHealth Heart of Florida, Lake Wales gives students a firsthand look at healthcare careers

LAKE WALES, Fla. - For Tia Rhodes and Alexis Kalaw, a career in healthcare isn't just a calling; they've also seen first-hand the impact it can have on people's lives.

"I love helping people. That's what really made me want to pursue a career in healthcare," Rhodes said.

"I do want to be a doctor, and I'm very interested in emergency care, the ICU and other urgent care," Kalaw said.

Rhodes and Kalaw were among 15 young adults who recently graduated from the Explorers program at AdventHealth Heart of Florida and AdventHealth Lake Wales.

Sponsored by Scouting America, Explorers gives young people from diverse backgrounds opportunities to gain career experience and explore pathways into healthcare.

The program is open to community members ages 16 to 21 and brings participants together monthly for hands-on learning, student-driven projects and mentorship from AdventHealth team members.

This year's class explored more than 10 healthcare disciplines and received mentorship from AdventHealth leaders, clinicians, educators and caregivers.

Experiences in cardiology, respiratory therapy, women's services, medical laboratory science, imaging, rehabilitation, nutrition, mental health and plant engineering gave students a broader understanding of the people and systems behind patient care.

A particularly impactful component was a Youth Mental Health Awareness session during which students learned to recognize when a peer may be struggling, how to offer support and when to seek help from a trusted adult or professional.

They also learned about mental health and crisis support resources available to those in need.

"Every time we went into the hospital, it was something different, and I liked it because they were giving you insights into every aspect of the hospital that makes it whole," Rhodes said. "I wouldn't have learned as much about the different departments without going through this program. I took in so much knowledge."

"My favorite part was women's services," Kalaw said. "There was a lot to learn about, and I have an even greater appreciation for the field now."

For Rhodes and Kalaw, the experience was also personal. Both have parents who are AdventHealth team members, and they credit the program with strengthening their career aspirations and self-confidence.

"Throughout the program, you make friendships and relationships with so many people," Kalaw said. "I feel like I've grown a lot. I've learned so much information, not only about medical care but about myself."

"I've met a lot of lovely people who gave me a lot of insight and told me about how their careers have gone in the medical field," Rhodes said.

Graduates who are still in high school have been invited to return next year to continue exploring healthcare careers.

Kalaw plans to return, while Rhodes has already taken another step toward her future career.

"I applied to AdventHealth University because I fell in love with ultrasound," Rhodes said. "I was accepted, and I've now finished my first semester."

"We're so proud of these amazing young people for everything they've accomplished as part of the program," said Jesse Birth, volunteer program manager at AdventHealth Heart of Florida. "It's been an honor and privilege to watch them all grow and learn. The future of healthcare is bright because of young people like them who are called to serve."
