WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Luz Rivas (CA-29) released the following statement after recent reporting by The New York Times on Cesar Chavez:
"The recent developments on Cesar Chavez's allegations are deeply troubling and sickening. I absolutely condemn these actions and commend the bravery of those who came forward to share their stories, including Dolores Huerta. They deserve to be heard and supported.
"Today's reporting is painful for generations of us who grew up knowing Cesar Chavez as a household name and learning about his contributions to the labor movement. However, we must acknowledge that a person's legacy does not excuse the harm they caused or overshadow the trauma victims have carried for decades.
"I also join in solidarity with United Farm Workers in their call to support the farmworkers and the progressive labor movement. Together, we will continue our fight for immigration justice. Additionally, I will no longer participate in upcoming events or activities celebrating the life or legacy of Cesar Chavez."
