FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sacramento - Following Newsom Administration's introduction of the 2025-26 State Budget, League of California Cities Executive Director and CEO Carolyn Coleman issued the statement below:
"Time and time again, surveys show that homelessness and housing costs are a top concern for residents throughout California. In addition, recent federal and state reports demonstrate that targeted and sustained funding reduces homelessness. That's why it is disappointing that the Governor's 2025-26 budget proposal fails to include any new funding for the Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention Grant Program and affordable housing programs.
At a time when over 180,000 Californians are unhoused on any given night and too many families are on the brink of losing their homes, all levels of government have a responsibility to work together - and not be at odds - until the problem is solved.
Cities are investing local dollars to support our unhoused residents and connect them to the services they deserve. But cities cannot go it alone. Lasting solutions require a strong local-state partnership and ongoing state funding that meets the scale of the crisis.
As the budget is finalized in the coming months, we are committed to working with the Governor's administration and the Legislature to secure state resources that can be leveraged with local resources to meet the housing needs of our cities and their residents."
Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
