Boston (April 9, 2026) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today led Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Representatives Jim McGovern (MA-02), Jake Auchincloss (MA-04), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Stephen Lynch (MA-08), and Bill Keating (MA-09) in writing to President Donald Trump and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Acting Administrator Karen Evans to request that they approve Governor Maura Healey's request that a federal Major Disaster be declared in the wake of the February 2026 blizzard. On February 23, communities across Massachusetts, and particularly in the southeastern part of the state, faced historic levels of snowfall, with more than 41 inches of snow reported in some areas.
"In light of the profound impact to Norfolk, Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties, we respectfully urge the prompt issuance of a Major Disaster Declaration and assistance authorizations. Doing so will allow FEMA to provide critical Public Assistance, Snow Assistance, and Hazard Mitigation funding to the Commonwealth in a timely and efficient manner," wrote the Massachusetts lawmakers. "We urge you to swiftly approve the Commonwealth's request for much-needed relief."
