Penn State Altoona student-athlete Jackson Newell, of Leechburg, was announced as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's Player of the Week in men's tennis on March 30.
LATROBE, Pa. - Penn State Altoona student-athlete Jackson Newell, of Leechburg, was announced as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's Player of the Week in men's tennis on March 30.
Newell won both of his singles and doubles matches on March 29 when the Penn State Altoona men's tennis team swept AMCC opponent Pitt-Greensburg in a doubleheader at home.
In the Lions' first match against the Bobcats, Newell prevailed by a 6-1, 6-1 decision in No. 3 singles while teaming up with Kody Cessna, of Apollo, for a 6-0 win together in No. 3 doubles. In Penn State Altoona's second match of the doubleheader, Newell nabbed a 6-1, 6-2 victory in No. 3 singles and again partnered with Cessna for a triumph in doubles, a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot.
Penn State Altoona won both matches by a score of 7-0.
This is Newell's first career AMCC Player of the Week award. This season, he holds an 8-3 overall record in singles play, including a 5-0 mark against conference opponents. In doubles, he is 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the AMCC.
Penn State Altoona men's tennis returns to action on March 30 with a 7 p.m. road match at non-conference opponent Waynesburg University.
