Senator Jon Bramnick (R-Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, and Union) is calling on the New Jersey Attorney General to establish an E-Bike Task Force to assist local law enforcement agencies in enforcing the state's new e-bike laws and improving public safety.
As e-bikes become increasingly common on New Jersey streets, sidewalks, and bike paths, Senator Bramnick said law enforcement agencies need additional resources, coordination, and guidance to effectively enforce the rules governing their use.
"E-bikes are here to stay, but that does not mean we should ignore the serious safety concerns that come with their increased use," said Senator Bramnick. "Too many serious injuries have occurred in e-bike accidents. We need to make sure our laws are not simply on the books - they need to be understood and enforced."
"Local police departments should not have to navigate these challenges on their own," Senator Bramnick said. "A statewide task force can give them the tools and coordination they need to protect pedestrians, motorists, and e-bike riders alike."
Senator Bramnick emphasized that the goal is not to prevent people from using e-bikes, but to ensure that riders follow the law and that communities have the resources necessary to keep everyone safe.
"We have established rules for a reason," Senator Bramnick said. "When violations put people at risk, there must be meaningful enforcement. The Attorney General can play an important role in bringing our law enforcement agencies together and making sure New Jersey is taking this issue seriously."
