Geosyntec's interactive Gulf lease sale map combines recent Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) lease sale results into a single GIS platform designed to help offshore operators evaluate lease areas across the Gulf.

Geosyntec released a new interactive Gulf lease sale map that consolidates results from the Big Beautiful Gulf 1 (BBG1), Big Beautiful Gulf 2 (BBG2), and Big Beautiful Gulf 3 (BBG3) lease sales into a single geospatial platform.
Developed by Lauren Shultz, Professional Marine Archaeologist and Subsea GIS Analyst, the map makes Gulf lease sale information easier to explore and interpret. Rather than reviewing lease sale results only in BOEM's tabular form, "the interactive tool allows users to view spatially who bid on lease blocks during the most recent sale, who won, and the sale details and statistics, as well as which companies bid and won jointly with other operators. All of this is overlaid against offshore infrastructure and bathymetry data," said Schultz.
The new tool builds on a long history of mapping and offshore geoscience work by Geosyntec's offshore energy team. Beginning in the early 2000s as GEMS, the Geosyntec team produced regional Gulf lease maps for Offshore Magazine, giving offshore operators a spatial reference for lease blocks and Gulf activity.
Senior Principal Daniel Lanier said those printed maps became a familiar client resource, providing a comprehensive view of Gulf lease blocks and seafloor conditions. "Many of our clients kept a copy displayed in their offices," he said.
The transition from a static lease map to an interactive GIS-based dashboard was made possible through Geosyntec's enterprise geospatial resources.
"Coming into Geosyntec allowed this to be possible," said Shultz. "We now have access to Geosyntec's enterprise portal platform and the resources needed to create a tool of this scale. It was an idea I had for some time, but the merger helped bring it into a form that can be used by the public."
The value of the Gulf lease sale map is its ability to place lease results in spatial context. Another benefit is highlighting where operators could gain an early understanding of the lease area's geological hazards via Geosyntec's past project work in the area.
"We manage geological, geotechnical, and regulatory risks," Lanier explained. "We can help build an early understanding of the project conditions to reduce uncertainty, minimize risk, and support the project's successful execution."
Geosyntec's offshore experience provides the technical foundation for the project history shown on the dashboard. Geosyntec greatly expanded its offshore experience through the merger with GEMS, which, since 1997, has built a reputation as an industry leader in offshore geohazards. The combined companies have worked with more than 100 clients on more than 3,200 geohazard, geotechnical, and archaeological projects worldwide, including projects in the Gulf of America, US East Coast, offshore Alaska, Southeast Asia, West Africa, East Africa, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the North Sea, South America, Australia, and other offshore regions.
The firm's Gulf experience includes integrated geophysical, geological, and geotechnical studies; shallow hazard assessments; archaeological assessments; survey QA/QC; geotechnical data interpretation; foundation engineering support; and work associated with offshore developments and pipeline systems.
