Shopify and OpenAI bring commerce to ChatGPT

Not long ago, Tobi Lütke shared a vision: a future where Shopify merchants could sell anywhere AI conversations happen. Today, we're taking another step toward that vision through our partnership with OpenAI.

Every day, countless people turn to AI to help them make decisions. What starts as a simple question-planning a dinner party, finding the right gift-naturally becomes a shopping moment. Soon, shoppers can buy from millions of merchants like Glossier, Spanx, Vuori, Away, Stanley 1913, and Steve Madden without leaving their conversation.

Shopify merchants will be able to sell directly in ChatGPT.

We've been working with @OpenAI for quite some time so people can search and buy products in chat, and it's something we've had a hard time keeping quiet.

"Shopping is changing fast. People are discovering products in AI conversations, not just through search or ads," says Vanessa Lee, VP of Product at Shopify. "This will let our merchants show up naturally in those moments and give shoppers a way to buy without breaking their flow. It's a really exciting shift for commerce."

Connecting millions of products to ChatGPT

Shopify powers product discovery with real-time data like pricing, inventory, images, and variants, making hundreds of millions of products instantly discoverable in a format that AI understands. When someone asks ChatGPT for recommendations, they access inventory from Shopify merchants for immediate purchase.

"AI will fundamentally reshape how our customers shop. Being on Shopify means we can automatically be wherever our customers are shopping-including inside AI conversations," says Colleen Waters, VP of eCommerce at Steve Madden. "That lets us stay focused on our brand and customers while staying at the forefront of commerce."

For merchants, their store name is displayed clearly so shoppers know exactly who they're buying from, and orders flow into the Shopify admin with proper attribution and transparent fees. They remain merchant of record, own the shopper relationship, and control whether shoppers go through the Instant Checkout experience or their online store.

"Our goal is always to keep merchants on the cutting edge by default," says Vanessa. "As we expand, merchants will unlock new ways to sell automatically, with their brand and shopper relationships still front and center. We're focused on building tools that help merchants grow, no matter their size or experience."

Reimagining commerce for the AI age

As more people turn to AI for help with shopping decisions, Shopify is ensuring those conversations lead to our merchants. This is agentic commerce in action: enabling transactions directly within AI conversations, giving merchants more ways to connect without replacing what already works.

The result? Entrepreneurs spend less time figuring out new channels and more time on what matters-their products, their shoppers, their business. While others debate AI's potential, Shopify merchants will already be selling through ChatGPT. We handle the technical complexity so they can focus on growth.

"We're making sure our merchants thrive in the era of agentic commerce," says Vanessa. "We're helping everyone from indie brands to household names reach shoppers in entirely new ways."

Because the future of commerce isn't about reacting to change-it's about being ready for it from the start.
