Press Release:
Firefighters Battle Attic Fire on Grant Blvd
Syracuse, NY- On Wednesday January 22, 2025 at 7:10 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported house on fire at 2225 Grant Blvd. Firefighters from Station 2, on Lodi Street, arrived at the scene within four minutes and found a two-and-a-half-story wood frame, multi-family residence with fire showing out attic windows. The Incident Commander transmitted a signal '99', indicating a working fire.
As teams of firefighters moved hoses to the rear stairwell and to the attic, other teams of firefighters prepared to methodically search the entire building. Three hose lines were stretched. Two were needed to extinguish the fire in the attic. The third hose line was brought to the second floor to search for and extinguish any trapped fire. Fire was found burning in the ceiling of the second floor and was extinguished quickly. The fire was declared out after approximately 30 minutes. Crews remained at the scene for an hour and a half longer clearing smoke from the building, cleaning up, and assisting with the investigation.
The building contains two apartments; the fire occurred in the attic and second-floor ceiling. That attic and second floor sustained fire, smoke, and water damage. Other parts of the building also suffered smoke and water damage. This fire displaced eleven occupants, four adults, and seven children; the Red Cross is assisting them. Syracuse Fire Investigators have determined the fire started in the space between the ceiling of the second floor and the attic floor. The cause is an undetermined electrical malfunction and is classified as accidental. Seven of the eleven occupants were transported to Upstate Hospital for smoke inhalation. There were no injuries to any firefighters.
A total of 41 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
