WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) - chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Science, and Justice - applauded the Senate's unanimous passage of the Criminal History Access Act, which he introduced with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I). The bipartisan legislation would allow Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) offices access to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) to improve vetting and hiring of local law enforcement officers. The bill passed the Senate yesterday and now heads to the President's desk to be signed into law.
"Keeping Kansas and our nation safe starts with hiring law enforcement officers committed to fulfilling their missions with integrity," said Sen. Moran. "This legislation will expand access to criminal history data to strengthen the vetting and hiring process for law enforcement officers entrusted with keeping our communities safe. I look forward to seeing it signed into law."
Rep. Derek Schmidt (R-KS-02) introduced the legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives, where it passed in May.
